Prerequisites for the course include

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Respiratory Therapist License
RN or LVN License

After completing this course, you will be able to

  • Provide initial ventilator settings for patients with acute respiratory failure.
  • Adjust ventilator settings based on the results of an arterial blood gas (ABG).
  • Select the appropriate level of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) for patients with restrictive lung disease.
  • Recognize and treat air trapping (dynamic hyperinflation) in patients with obstructive airway disease.
  • Troubleshoot excessively high airway pressures.
  • Manage the patient on mechanical ventilation who abruptly deteriorates.
  • Assess a patient’s readiness for extubating.

Vent & Trach Course Description

This is an excellent course for nurses and caregivers planning to care for ventilator-dependent patients in the homecare and sub-acute setting, where ventilator troubleshooting skills are imperative. For many RN’s, LPN/LVN’s working in skilled nursing facilities, these patients will provide a new challenge and demand that they develop new skills.

This course is offered to medical healthcare professionals and even those who are looking forward to using this skill in their future healthcare careers.

Upon completion of this course, providers will define basic terms and concepts of mechanical ventilation, describe indication of mechanical ventilation, understand the difference between oxygenation and ventilation, identify initial parameters, settings and special issues associated with ventilator setup, troubleshoot and recognize alarms, and evaluate patient response to the ventilator.
Upon completion providers will receive Certification of Completion and Continuing Educational Units approved by BRN and BVNPT for Healthcare Provider.

This course aims to take the mystery out of tracheostomy care. Using video demonstration and thorough review of industry best practice doctors, nurses and other healthcare practitioners will gain the knowledge and the confidence they will need to provide quality care.
